The Bellingham City Council last night passed the red light ordinance by a vote of 6 - 1. Most of the citizen testimony during the open comment time was again against the measure with a couple Council members saying their email was running 50-50 on the issue.

Seth Fleetwood voted against the red light cameras, saying that while well meaning people were trying do do the right job for good reasons, he was against this "Orwellian" notion, saying "Do we want to live in a place of cameras?" While he acknowledged there were plenty of private cameras in commercial businesses, he said the one place to draw the line is on government cameras "peering" at people.

Again last night, no Council member mentioned the name of the company the contract will be with. Stan Snapp referred to the local citizens who testified against the cameras as being a "parade through Council." Terry Borneman restated his previous statement that the Council would learn nothing new from a public hearing and he prefers police advice to citizen advice. Gene said all their minds were made up and so a public hearing would just be a waste of time and he refused to apologize for cancelling the hearing even after a 7 - 0 vote in September to hold one. Gene is the president of the Council and may or may not have the power to do that, but he did and no one legally challenged him.

So - this writer's intention is to work with others and document the facts of this issue over the next months and year. And to see if the red light camera system is as pernicious as we think it is. I'll be posting more soon with links to websites that provide facts on the shortening of yellow lights and other methods of extracting sufficient revenue from local citizens. I believe this is a racket, not a safety project.

Update and correction:  Gene has informed me that he, as Council president, does not have the authority to cancel a hearing - and that the Council voted 7 - 0 a few weeks ago to cancel the hearing.
