HOME | OUT OF IRAQ RESOLUTION | LETTER TO SENATOR MURRAY

October 19, 2006

Dear Senator Murray,

The Whatcom Democrats bring to your attention the included Resolution “Out Of Iraq” which was passed here in Whatcom County by both the Whatcom County Democratic Women’s Club (October 9, 2006) and the Whatcom County Democratic Central Committee (October 11, 2006).

Whatcom County Democrats have grave concerns that the United States is still involved in a preemptive war in Iraq. Polls, both in Iraq and in the United States, show that the people in both countries want to see this war ended and the United States troops returned home. What will it take to have this happen?

Whatcom Democrats have asked our U.S. elected representatives to end this war and that has not happened for many reasons, primarily because the Democrats are in the minority. Now the Whatcom Democrats are asking for your support to bring the war issue to a vote in Iraq. Whatcom Democrats have no process for that and leave it to the elected representatives to bring that about.

Whatcom Democrats passed this resolution believing that the administration would have a difficult time not recognizing an Iraqi vote due to the “democracy the United States has spread to that country.”  And it would show respect for the Iraqi people and their right to determine the direction for their country.

Whatcom Democrats think that it would also allow the United States to save some “face” while undergoing an organized withdrawal and give time for other countries, including the UN, to offer needed help.

Whatcom Democrats recognize that this resolution is certainly thinking outside the box and would be unique in world history. This preemptive war was based upon a democratic vote which in turn was based upon a series of lies. Perhaps it will take a democratic vote in Iraq to end it.

Thank for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Zetta Bracher, President, Whatcom County Democratic Women’s Club
