The role of the investigative journalist is to shine a bright light on corruption, expose misuse of power and backroom deals, and to be a resource for whistleblowers. It’s a profession that has led some reporters to jail when they would not divulge their source. Our democracy relies on these reporters to hold government accountable. Controversy swirls around them as they probe for the truth.

Here the Washington Post reports about one of these controversial figures, Gavin MacFadyn, who died Oct. 22. He was the founder of the London-based Center for Investigative Journalism.
