Thoughts on St. Patrick’s Day
Connacht, Leinster, Ulster and Munster are still in bondage.
Connacht, Leinster, Ulster and Munster are still in bondage.
Were Saint Patrick alive today he would have more to drive out of the four provinces of Ireland than snakes. Today's equivalent "snakes" are the British with their colonial thumb on Ulster and the European Central Bank with its economic austerity thumb on Connacht, Leinster and Munster.
Irish singer and songwriter Tommy Makem would have to rewrite his 1967 song "Four Green Fields" today but he is no longer with us. Though we can still listen to him here.

Mar 19, 2017It’s not “bondage” if the majority of people in Ulster consistently vote to remain part of the UK. DO you consider Texas, AZ, NM, CA, UT, CO and all other parts of what once were Mexico to be in “bondage”?
The Irish alone among the Celtic peoples managed to regain their independence (leaving aside whether a member of the EU and Eurozone can really be called independent) - my own tribe was finally beaten at Culloden in 1746 and dispersed through cooption of greedy elites with the Highland clearances . But ask anyone of Scots origin whether Scotland is in “bondage” because now part of the UK and except for the most diehard of nationalists you’ll get a raised eyebrow and a smile.
After twenty years of peacemaking the situation in Ireland is almost normalised - I know this because I visited Armagh in the late seventies when the IRA was blowing up yachts and kneecapping enemies and it was very very ugly - soldiers everywhere as martial law was in place. Contrast this to today and peace reigns, the border is no longer fortified and manned by soldiers but a simple formality - do you really want a return to the troubles with your emotive talk?
Oh - btw - Erin go Bragh! Scots Wey Hey! Celtic unity today! And a happy St. Paddy’s day to you!
